ESG Investing: Profit with Responsibility

More and more investors want to not only grow their wealth but also ensure their money doesn’t cause harm. ESG Investing has become the biggest trend in the financial industry. But what’s really behind the abbreviations?

What Does ESG Stand For?

ESG represents three central criteria used to evaluate companies:
- E (Environmental): Climate protection, CO2 emissions, energy efficiency.
- S (Social): Labor rights, diversity, fair wages, product safety.
- G (Governance): Corporate leadership, anti-corruption, board transparency.

ESG vs. SRI: What’s the Difference?

In the world of ETFs, you’ll mostly encounter two variants:
1. ESG Screened: Only the worst "sinners" (like weapons manufacturers or tobacco companies) are excluded. The portfolio remains very similar to the standard market.
2. SRI (Socially Responsible Investing): This is a much stricter approach. Only the "best-in-class" companies from each industry are selected. The portfolio is more concentrated and significantly "greener."

The Greenwashing Trap

Not everything labeled "ESG" is 100% green. Many ESG indices still contain oil companies or tech giants with questionable governance.

> [!WARNING]
> Always check the Top 10 Holdings of the ETF before buying. If you don't want oil stocks in your portfolio, a simple ESG filter often isn't enough—you’ll likely need an SRI ETF or a "Paris-Aligned" benchmark.

Does ESG Affect Returns?

There’s a long-standing myth that sustainability costs returns. However, studies show that companies with high ESG ratings are often better managed and less prone to scandals. In the long run, performance is usually comparable to the broad market, often with lower risk of extreme drawdowns.

Conclusion

ESG Investing is more than just a trend. It’s a powerful tool for directing capital flows toward a more sustainable economy. As a "Pro" investor, you should look closely at which level of filtering matches your personal values.
