The MSCI Emerging Markets (EM) index is the premier benchmark for the developing world. It covers approximately 1,400 companies across 24 countries that are transitioning to developed status.

High Growth, High Risk

Emerging markets offer significantly higher demographic growth and rapid urbanization compared to developed nations. However, this comes with risks such as political instability, currency volatility, and less transparent corporate governance.

Country Concentration

The index is currently dominated by China (approx. 25-30%), followed by Taiwan, India, and South Korea. This means the performance of the EM index is highly sensitive to geopolitical and economic shifts in the Asian region.

Consumer and Tech Shift

While EM was once about materials and mining, it is now dominated by Technology (TSMC, Samsung) and Consumer Giants (Alibaba, Tencent). It is an investment in the rising middle class of the world.

Expert Tip

Most "World" portfolios follow a market-cap weighting of 88% World / 12% EM. If you want to "tilt" towards growth, a 70/30 split is a common strategy among private investors.
